At Bahan reservoir, solar electricity shares a working water site

Floating panels link an Emek Hefer irrigation reservoir to a second task: generating electricity.

Select an underlined term for a short explanation.

Bahan reservoir in Emek Hefer stores water for irrigating nearby fields. Doral describes its floating solar project there as a partnership with the Emek Hefer Water Association and lists commercial operation from 2023. The setting makes the idea tangible: an existing agricultural water site also becomes a place to generate electricity, while retaining its reservoir function.

puts solar modules on buoyant supports. The World Bank, ESMAP and Singapore's SERIS explain that the engineering also includes and anchoring. A reservoir's depth, wind and changing water level influence that design. The structure must stay in its intended area while responding to movement; installing panels on water involves more than changing what supports them.

The World Bank's earlier market report describes why this approach attracts places where land is constrained: it can reduce the need to acquire and prepare a separate land site. The same report flags possible effects on and the difficulty of maintaining electrical equipment in a water environment. These are general considerations, not measured findings about Bahan.

At this reservoir, the water association and energy developer represent two operating needs that meet at the same site. Evaluating the arrangement means looking at both services. An electricity-production record would describe the energy side; records of water availability, access and reservoir operation would help describe the irrigation side. Neither record should be treated as a substitute for the other.

A useful account of Bahan over time could therefore follow a complete irrigation season alongside its solar production. It could show how maintenance was coordinated, whether water operations changed and which benefits were actually measured. The project demonstrates a real Israeli location for shared infrastructure. Understanding how well the two activities work together requires those operational details, beyond the visible fact that panels float on a reservoir.
