What happens when a solar roof becomes a garden?

Bradfield’s roof offers a promising cooling story—and a lesson in separating measurements from models.

Select an underlined term for a short explanation.

At First Building in Bradfield City, Western Sydney, a rooftop brings native planting and solar technology into the same design. University of Technology Sydney researchers, led by Peter Irga, assessed its performance for the Bradfield Development Authority. A makes the space above a building part of both an energy system and a living landscape.

The connection begins with temperature. Solar cells need light, but extra heat can reduce their electrical efficiency. The US Department of Energy explains that rising cell temperature changes electrical behaviour, with voltage losses outweighing a small current increase. Cooling can therefore matter even on a bright day. That principle explains why the environment around a panel deserves attention alongside its rated power; it does not prescribe a universal percentage improvement.

The full report’s electricity comparison used measured weather and panel temperatures with modelling for 20 November–17 December 2025. It estimated an average per-panel advantage of 11.1%, reaching 23.25% on high- days. These are study-period estimates, not a directly metered annual gain. Its stormwater analysis also used modelled rainfall scenarios. Those distinctions are less dramatic than a headline, but essential to understanding what was tested.

A planted roof also needs to function as a roof. The US Environmental Protection Agency describes protective and drainage layers beneath the vegetation, along with maintenance such as irrigation, weeding and replanting. Through , vegetation can remove heat, while planted layers can slow runoff. The benefits come with construction and care requirements; a green surface is not a maintenance-free substitute for ordinary building engineering.

The practical next step is to ask what remains true over a longer period. How do plant condition, water demand and maintenance affect performance? How closely do future electricity-meter readings match the estimated advantage? The Bradfield assessment offers a site-specific starting point for those questions. Its value lies in bringing the roof’s different jobs into one evaluation, while leaving room to test how the results hold up elsewhere.
