Huawei’s expo announcement puts grid-forming controls alongside AI
The company describes solar, storage and charging products at IDEE 2026. Their common technical question is how power electronics can help a grid remain stable.

A solar installation needs a way to work with the electrical network around it. In a release dated 20 September 2026, Huawei Digital Power said it had presented grid-forming and AI-based solutions at IDEE, held from 15 to 17 September. Its announcement covered solar plants, storage, microgrids and charging. This article is SPFI’s adaptation of the company release, with independent technical context rather than independent verification of its products.
An InverterEquipment converting direct-current electricity into alternating current. converts the direct-current electricity produced by solar panels into the alternating current used by the grid. The US Department of Energy explains that conventional grid-following equipment synchronises with an existing network signal. A Grid-forming controlControl that lets an inverter establish a voltage and frequency reference. inverter can establish that signal. This is a control capability: it does not mean the equipment creates energy without an available source such as generation or storage.
Britain’s National Energy System Operator describes grid forming as a way for inverter-connected equipment to control voltage and current fluctuations. The distinction matters as solar, wind and batteries replace some of the stabilising contribution once supplied by rotating machines. For readers, the useful comparison is therefore not just the power rating printed on a device, but its behaviour when the surrounding network changes.
A US research roadmap described by the Department of Energy in 2021 highlighted work still needed in controls, modelling and technical standards. That historical context helps explain why a product presentation and a system-wide demonstration answer different questions. Equipment has to interact with other resources and protective systems; evidence from a specified test configuration is more informative than a claim of universal stability.
Huawei’s release also describes AI tools for operations and energy management. It offers performance and commercial claims, but the inspected announcement does not supply an independently assessable dataset for all of them. For an actual project, the next useful evidence would identify the configuration, operating conditions and measured response. The announcement shows the capabilities Huawei is promoting; it does not establish the results every customer will obtain.
