A reader’s guide to agricultural R&D institutions in Israel

Seven entries, different roles: national research, regional trials, laboratory services and a supporting foundation—with links to check the work behind each name.

Where does a grower turn when an agricultural question needs more than a product brochure? Israel’s research landscape includes national institutes, regional trial centres, laboratories and organisations that support their work. This selected guide starts with IsraelAgri’s R&D directory and checks institutional websites to explain seven entries. It is a route into the evidence, not a ranking or a complete register of Israeli research.

1. Agricultural Research Organization — Volcani Institute. Its official overview describes six institutes covering plants, animals, plant protection, soil and water, food and postharvest science, and agricultural engineering. This breadth makes it a starting point for finding a research discipline or team. Volcani also operates Neve Yaar and Gilat: these centres belong to the same organisation, rather than representing additional independent national institutes.

2. Gilat Research Center. Listed separately in the original directory, Gilat is part of Volcani. Its work addresses agriculture in arid and semi-arid conditions, including soil, water, crops, plant protection and food quality. For readers following field results, the useful connection is between the growing environment and the experiment: a finding needs its crop, water conditions and method alongside it.

3. Central & Northern Arava-Tamar R&D. The centre’s website organises work into areas including vegetables, orchards, soil and water, postharvest research and aquaculture. It also provides routes to reports and climate information. Those separate resources help readers move from a broad institutional description to a particular question about cultivation or regional conditions.

4. Southern Arava R&D. This is a separate regional centre, not another name for Central & Northern Arava-Tamar R&D. Its website offers research archives, meteorology and a soil, water and plant testing laboratory. A laboratory service and a published research finding serve different purposes; readers should identify which kind of information they are using.

5. Ramat Negev R&D. Its public site provides research, work programmes, seasonal summaries and meteorological information, including material on greenhouse tomato irrigation. Frontier describes itself as the centre’s innovation and commercialisation arm. Keeping that relationship visible helps distinguish the research centre from the organisation helping technologies reach users and markets.

6. Zemach Agricultural Technologies. The organisation reached through the directory’s Zemach Nisyonot link describes three main activities: applied agricultural research, soil, water and plant-nutrition laboratory services, and agricultural technology development and validation. Its website also separates field services from the research farm. This is a useful distinction when looking for a trial report rather than a service provider.

7. ICA in Israel. ICA is included here as a supporting foundation, not a laboratory or experimental station. Its published programme includes research and innovative projects addressing agricultural challenges in Israel’s geographic periphery. A funding relationship does not itself establish an experimental result or endorse a particular technology.
