Israel’s 2025 solar capacity: reading the rise beyond the headline
IRENA records 7,121 MW of photovoltaic capacity at the end of 2025. The increase is substantial, but the table also carries clues about what the numbers can tell us.
Select an underlined term for a short explanation.
A year of solar development can be condensed into a single line in a statistical table. In IRENA’s Renewable capacity statistics 2026, Israel’s photovoltaic total rises from 5,363 megawatts in 2024 to 7,121 in 2025. The difference is 1,758 MW, or about 32.8%, calculated by SPFI from the published figures. That is a change in the reported national stock of equipment, rather than a direct measurement of electricity delivered to homes.
The key term is Installed capacityThe rated power of generating equipment; it does not state the energy produced over a year.. IRENA describes its measure as maximum net generating capacity, generally recorded at the end of the calendar year. The figures are rounded to whole megawatts. Think of this as a photograph of the generating fleet at a particular date: useful for tracking its size, but unable to show how many hours each plant operated or how much electricity passed through the grid during the year.
Even the word solar needs a boundary. The 7,121 MW figure refers to Photovoltaics (PV)Technology that converts light directly into electricity using solar cells., the technology that converts light directly into electricity. A separate IRENA table records 242 MW of concentrated solar power for Israel in 2025. Adding the two gives 7,363 MW of solar capacity. Keeping these technologies separate helps readers compare like with like instead of treating every solar headline as if it counted the same equipment.
Small letters beside the values deserve attention too. IRENA marks the 2024 PV figure with “u,” identifying an unofficial source, and the 2025 figure with “o,” identifying an official source. This does not invalidate the comparison, but it means the 32.8% rise should be described as growth in this published series. The table alone cannot separate physical additions from any revisions or changes in reporting coverage between the two observations.
The next question is Electricity generationElectrical energy produced during a period, usually expressed in kWh, MWh or GWh.: how much energy did those installations actually produce? That requires a separate electricity dataset, measured over a period rather than at year end. This annual snapshot therefore establishes a clear baseline for following Israel’s solar sector, while leaving national electricity shares and avoided emissions to reports that measure them.
