Three harvests to test solar shade above a pear orchard
A French orchard experiment will follow fruit, trees and water use together.
Select an underlined term for a short explanation.
At La Pugère in Mallemort, southern France, a pear orchard has become a test of how much useful work solar shade can do. CVE reports a 50 kWp installation with scientific monitoring by INRAE. Fixed, partly transparent panels stand 4.5 metres above the trees. The investigation covers three harvests, from 2026 to 2028.
The project's earlier Capenergies record puts irrigation at the centre of the experiment. Its question joins two farm decisions: where to intercept sunlight and how to manage water. The hoped-for benefit is less EvapotranspirationWater leaving soil and plants as vapour., alongside a productive orchard. Those are research objectives. The record does not establish how many litres will be saved or how many pears will reach the market.
Shade has a complicated history in agrivoltaic research. INRAE's account of earlier Sun’Agri experiments describes conditions in which crops maintained yields despite receiving less sunlight, but also limitations of fixed shading. Researchers subsequently developed movable panels to alter the shadow. This background explains why AgrivoltaicsAgricultural production and solar electricity generation sharing a site. needs crop-specific investigation: a result obtained with one crop and light pattern cannot simply settle the design of an orchard.
CVE says the orchard study will track tree function, water needs, yield and fruit quality, using instruments and an unshaded Control plotA comparison area without the treatment being tested.. Comparing those observations matters because the commercially useful outcome involves several measurements at once. A lower irrigation total would need to be read alongside the amount and quality of fruit harvested.
The interesting outcome may therefore be a set of conditions under which the canopy works well. A grower reading the eventual results should be able to ask what happened in each season, how the comparison was managed and whether fruit quality changed with water use. Reporting that detail would make the experiment useful beyond its own rows of trees, while leaving other orchards room to reach different answers.
